[394] The three names, Αἱμονίδης, Αὐτόφονος, λυκοφόντης, are evidently meant to have a murderous ring (Fäsi). Μαίων is a traditional name, not one invented for the purpose; according to Statius he was an augur and priest of Apollo, which would explain “θεῶν τεράεσσι” (398). Paus. (ix. 18. 2) says that according to local tradition at Thebes it was he who buried Tydeus.
