[94] The poison of snakes was supposed to be derived from herbs which they ate. “μέλλοντες δέ τινα ἐλλοχᾶν ἄνθρωπον θῆρα θανατηφόρους ῥίζας ἐσθίουσι καὶ τὰς πόας τοιαύτας”, Aelian H. A. vi. 4. Cf. coluber mala gramina pastus, Virg. Aen. ii. 471 in a passage imitated from this.
