[457] ὦιξε, a contracted form found here only, cf. “ὤϊξε” above, 446. We have, however, “οἴξασα6.89, and “ἀνῶιγεν14.168. The origin of the verb is entirely obscure. An initial “Ϝ” seems to be indicated by forms like “ἀναοίγεσκον, ἀν-έ-ωιγ-ε, ἀν-έωιξ-ε”, etc., but is nowhere in H. supported by metre, and in 2.809 is inadmissible. The Lesbian form “ὀείγην” (Collitz 214. 44) would point to “ὀϜείγ-”, not “Ϝοιγ-”, as the root, with “ὀϜιγ” as weak form (G. Meyer Gr. § 475). This accounts for the usual form “ὤϊξε”, and we might be inclined to read “ἀνοείγεσκον” in 455 (“ανοϊγεσκον” Brandreth), “ἀνόειγεν16.221, etc., were it not that the forms with -“εωι” are well supported in Where Attic. so much is uncertain alterations are useless (“Ἑρμειας Ϝρεια Ϝ᾽ ωϊξε”, Brandreth).
