[461] Ἀσίω: so Ar., who regarded it as the gen. of a proper name “Ἀσίας” (for “Ἀσίεω”), said to have been a king of Lydia. So Herod.iv. 45καὶ τούτου μὲν μεταλαμβάνονται τοῦ οὐνόματος Λυδοί, φάμενοι ἐπὶ Ἀσίεω τοῦ Κότυος τοῦ Μάνεω κεκλῆσθαι τὴν Ἀσίαν”. Virgil, on the other hand, clearly read “Ἀσίωι”:

varias pelagi volucres, et quae Asia circum
Dulcibus in stagnis rimantur prata Caystri.

Ceu quondam nivei liquida inter nubila cycni
Cum sese e pastu referunt et longa canoros
Dant per colla modos, sonat amnis et Asia longe
Pulsa palus.

This is the only passage in the Iliad indicating knowledge in detail of any part of the coast of Asia Minor beyond the Troad.
