[789] The position of δεινός produces an effect almost unique in the Iliad. It is a fine instance of the self-restraint of the Greek artist that so simple and easy a way of producing a cheap sensation should have been banished except from the few points where it is really justified. Compare “βάλλ̓: αἰεὶ δέ κ.τ.λ.” 1.52.
