[374] ὑπὸ χερσίν: this instrumental use of “ὑπό” with dat. is developed from the local by a transition which is quite easy in phrases like the present, where ‘subjection’ or ‘falling prostrate’ is the leading idea; in “ὑπὸ δουρὶ τυπείς, ὑπὸ νούσωι φθίσθαι” (13.667), “ὕπνωι ὕπο γλυκερῶι ταρπώμεθα”, the local sense almost fades away, but never quite disappears. Obs. ἁλοῦσα, aor. of the moment of capture; περθομένη, pres. of a continuing state.
