[155] φίλε: a trochee, as 5.359, 21.308, and so “φίλαι, φίλατο”. The lengthening in the verb is, of course, regular: in the adj. it appears to be due solely to the first arsis, and is a real metrical licence, as in the case of “διά” (3.357, etc.) and “ἐπεί” (23.2, etc.). See App. D under C 1. The der. of “φίλος” is unknown; but there is no instance of “ι_” in Greek except in a few late imitations of this phrase. For the long “ε” of κασίγνητε see H. G. § 387. θάνατον: acc. expressing the result of the action, H. G. § 136. 4.
