[467] γάρ: vulg. “γάρ ῥ᾽”, which is at best a clumsy compound (though it is found a few times) and not required by either sense or metre; for “ἐρύοντα” originally began with “ϝ”, and the caesura alone in this part of the line would suffice to lengthen the short syllable. The particle has similarly invaded nearly all MSS. in 2.342.
