[157] φεύγων, ὁ δὲ . . διώκων is better Greek than “ὁ μὲν φεύγων” which we should be inclined to expect. Pindar I. vi. 60 “νίκας τρεῖς, ἀπ᾽ Ἰσθμοῦ, τὰς δ᾽ ἀπ᾽ εὐφύλλου Νεμέας”. ‘It is usual, when an expression which denotes a sum is followed by the items, that only the second should be marked as such,’ W.M. Her. ii. 144, where other instances will be found. So 7.420 “ὀτρύνοντο νέκυς τ᾽ ἀγέμεν, ἕτεροι δὲ μεθ᾽ ὔλην”, and see note on 24.527.
