[565] Cf. 526. ξύμβαλον, perhaps we should supply “φάλαγγας” from 563, as 20.55 “τοὺς ἀμφοτέρους θεοὶ σύμβαλον,” 3.70 “ἔμ᾽ ἐν μέσσωι . . καὶ Μενέλαον συμβάλετε . . μάχεσθαι”. The act. of this aor. does not occur absolutely in H., in the sense to join battle, though the mid. is thus used in 20.335 and “ξυμβλήμεναι, ξυμβλήτην” (21.578, Od. 21.15) are act. forms. In later Greek the act. is common enough (e.g. Aisch. Cho. 461 “Ἄρης Ἄρει ξυμβαλεῖ δίκα δίκαι”, and often in Herodotos).
