[51] δεύτατος also Od. 1.286, Od. 23.342. It appears to be a superlative to “δεύτερος” from the strong form of root du-, two (G. Meyer Gr.Ρ”. 497); the sense will then be derived from the secondary sense of “δεύτερος”, later (e.g. 10.368, 22.207), on the analogy of “ὕστατος” by “ὕστερος”. Brugmann connects both with “δεύ-ομαι”, fall behind, in the sense follow, cf. sec-undus; but the root of that verb is probably deus (see on 18.100). In Gr. ii. “Ρ”. 656 he admits the possibility of connexion with “δύω”.
