[105] Ταφίων. The “Ταφίων νῆσοι” were a number of islets off the Leucadian coast, the largest of which was Taphos (Meganisi). They were inhabited by Teleboans and Taphians (cp. Eur. Herc.19ἀνδρῶν ἡρώων Ταφίων ἰδὲ Τηλεβοάων”), who were a race of pirates. Cp. Suidas s.v. “Τάφιος” = “ λῃστής”. In Hom. Od.1. 181 they are called “φιλήρετμοι”. The eponymous founder of the Taphian race was Taphos or Taphios, son of Pterelus. Etym. M. 748.
