[209] θαμὰ τοῖον. We find “τοῖον” used in the sense of “οὕτως” as a mere adverb Il.4. 488; 5.7; 22.241; Od.3. 496.As qualifying a noun “σιγῇ τοῖον” Od.4. 776; 7.30. As qualifying an adjective or adverb “θάνατος . . ἀβληχρὸς μάλα τοῖος” Od.11. 135; 23. 282, “πέλαγος μέγα τοῖον” Od.3. 321, “ἐπιεικέα τοῖον” Il.23. 246, “κερδαλέον δὴ τοῖον” Od.15. 451, “σαρδάνιον μάλα τοῖον” Od.20. 302.The word in each case is ‘deictic,’ expressing by the speaker's gesture the force, whether qualifying or intensifying, which it adds to the word with which it is joined. Here we might render it by the familiar phrase, ‘ever so often,’ ‘often and often.’

ἐπεί introduces the reason of his being able to detect the likeness.
