[147] κεῖται here is subj. The regular form would be “κείεται” (cp. “φθίεται, βλήεται”, &c.), whence “κέεται, κεῖται”. The form “κῆται” is found in one MS. here, and in one (viz. AVen. ) in Il.19. 32.It was adopted by Hermann (Op.ii. 55), Wolf, &c. Probably the true Homeric form was “κέεται”, which suits the metre everywhere except in Il.24. 554(where “κείεται” is admissible). It may be noticed that the contracted subj. form “κεῖται” would originally have been quite distinguishable from the indic. “κεῖται”. In the pre-Euclidean alphabet the former would be written KETAI, the latter KEITAI.
