[435] ὥς περ Κύκλωψ ἔρξε. Eustath. finds great fault with this: “ἀδιανόητόν ἐστιν. οὐ γὰρ δή που καὶ Κύκλωψ μετέβαλε τοὺς περὶ τὸν Ὀδυσσέα ἐπὶ φυλακῇ τοῦ κατ᾽ αὐτὸν σπηλαίου: ἀλλ᾽ ἐθοινήσατο καὶ ἀπώλεσε”. But the reference to the Cyclops is to illustrate especially καὶ ἀνάγκῃ, though the construction is quite broken. Eurylochus remembers how his comrades had entered the dwelling of the Cyclops, and had been kept fast prisoners therein. ἔρξε here is from “ἔργω” (penned us up) as in Od.14. 411, and not from “ἔρδω”.
