[113] Telemachus wishes the Suitors to understand that his success in stringing the bow will not affect the issue as regards them. Similarly in 21. 314 ff. Penelope soothes the alarm of the Suitors by explaining that the supposed beggar is not a claimant for her hand. If he succeeds he shall be dismissed with a fitting gift. In all this there is a vein of poetical ‘irony.’
