[354] ἔμπης ‘after all,’ ‘really now,’ said in a deprecating tone before announcing a prodigy: cp. 19. 37 “ἔμπης μοι τοῖχοι κτλ.” Eurymachus pretends to think that Ulysses with his torches is a source of light that can only be ascribed to the presence of a divine being (19. 40 “ μάλα τις θεὸς ἔνδον”).
