[299] ὅτ᾽ οὐκέτι φυκτὰ πέλοντο, ‘when there was no more chance of escape.’ Cp. “ἐπεὶ οὐκέτ᾽ ἀνεκτὰ πέλονται Od.20. 223.The emphasis thrown on τότε δή seems to declare for the reading “ὅτ[ε”], but many modern editors prefer τε, i. e. “ὅτι τε”, comparing Od.3. 166; 12.295.

With φυκτά in the sense of an abstract noun=‘escape’ cp. “ἶσα”= ‘equality,’ Od.2. 203, “ἄριστα”=‘success,’ Od.3. 129.The reading (see crit. note) πέλοιτο for “πέλοντο” perhaps shows that “ τε” for “ὅτι” was known to the Scholl.
