[218] αὕτη δίκη ἐστὶ βροτῶν, ‘this is the way with mortals.’ Cp. Od.4. 691.

The reading ὅτε κέν τε θάνωσι may be supposed to be a later assimilation to the number of “βροτῶν”, but the combination “κέν τε” is suspicious. For the change from plural to singular cp. Od.5. 120“θεαῖς ἀγάασθε . . ἤν τίς τε ποιήσεται Od., 13. 180 πομπῆς μὲν παύσασθε βροτῶν ὅτε κέν τις ἵκηται”. See also Il.20. 454.The singular is also more appropriate, as it suggests the special instance of Anticlea herself. For the resumption of the plural cp. Od.9. 96“ὅς τις φάγοι . . . οὐκ ἤθελεν . . . ἀλλὰ βούλοντο”.
