The story appears in a different shape on the authority of Demetrius Phalereus (quoted by Schol. H. M. Q. R. E. on Od. 3.267), “Μενέλαος ἅμα τῷ Ὀδυσεῖ ἐλθὼν ἐς Δελφοὺς τὸν θεὸν ἤρετο περὶ τῆς μελλούσης ἔσεσθαι ἐς Ἴλιον στρατείας”.
