This again is a piece of poetical irony. ‘Would that the fellow (“οὗτος”) may benefit by it in proportion as he is sure of being able to string this bow.’ The speaker means ‘not at all,’ but his wish is fulfilled in the opposite sense to that which is in his mind. Note that οὗτος properly belongs to the former of the two clauses, but is postponed in order to bring οὗτος and τοῦτο together.
