304-306. Of these fictitious names Πολυπημονίδης may refer to Laertes and Ulysses as ‘much-suffering’ heroes. Or it may be suggested by their ancestral riches (from “πολυπάμων”, with hyperIonic η for α̈): cp. “Ἀφείδας” = ‘unsparing.’ Ἐπήριτος, from “ἔρις”, is perhaps an allusion to the meaning of the name “Ὀδυσσεύς” (see 19. 407 ff.).
