[7] ἕδραι = ‘messes,’ ‘parties.’ The number nine corresponds with that of the Pylian cities. Five hundred at each mess gives a total of 4500, which tallies with the number of men on board of Nestor's ninety ships at Troy, reckoning (from Il.2. 719) fifty to each ship. Schol. H. M. Q. say “ἐννέα πόλεων ἦρχεν Νέστωρ”, and Schol. E. P. S.διὰ τὸ ἐννεάπολιν εἶναι τὴν Πύλον”.
