[260] ἑκὰς ἄστεος, i.e. Mycenae. The difficulty in this reading lies in the fact that “ἄστυ” generally takes the initial “ϝ”; but to this rule there are exceptions; as e.g. Il.24. 320ὑπὲρ ἄστεος”. The reading “Ἄργεος” introduces a geographical difficulty; for it cannot refer to the city of Argos, where Diomed was king, and if we extend it to include the whole kingdom of Agamemnon, it will not suit the circumstances of the text.
