[110] οἷσιν ἀνάσσοι. See crit. note. If we adopt the v. 1. τοῖσιν we must suppose that it stands for “τέοισιν”, as “τεῦ” for “τίνος”. Or if we read τῶν instead of τῶνδ᾽, we may take “τοῖσιν” as demonstrative parallel with “τῶν”, and render ‘who was king of them, and ruled over them.’ If we read οἷσιν, we must translate, ‘asked who was king of this folk, and over whom did he reign,’ the question then being a double one, demanding the names both of king and people. For “ὅς” in an indirect question after “ὅς τις” cp. Od.17. 363γνοίη θ᾽ οἵ τινές εἰσιν ἐναίσιμοι, οἵ τ᾽ ἀθέμιστοι”. See also Il.9. 392ἑλέσθω
