[107] ἤρατο. Eustath. “ὑπέμεινε καὶ ἐβάστασε”. If this sense be adopted, there is a sort of hysteron proteron in “ἐμόγησε καὶ ἤρατο”, ‘achieved and undertook.’ Compare “νηῦς ἄχθος ἄροιτο Il.20. 247.

τῷ δ᾽ ἄρ᾽ ἔμελλεν αὐτῷ. Many interpret “τῷ” ‘wherefore;’ but it seems better to take it as the dative of the demonstrative, strengthened by the addition of “αὐτῷ” (ei ipsi), to form a marked antithesis to “ἐμοί”.
