[398] οἱ δ᾽ἐκέλευον, i. e. the chieftains to whom the proposal was made, as the next line shows, not the whole assembled company. Similarly where the same line occurs, Od.7. 226, “ἐκέλευον” means ‘gave their voices for it;’ “κελεύειν” may be used either in reference to what is to be carried out by others, or (as here) to what is to be carried out by joint action. The form is varied in Il.4. 380οἱ δ᾽ ἔθελον δόμεναι καὶ ἐπῄνεον ὡς ἐκέλευον”.
