[400] ἐυμμελίην, ‘with good spear.’ The ash being the most appropriate wood for spear-shafts, was used as an equivalent for the spear itself. Cp. Ov. Met.5. 143‘nam Clytii per utrumque gravi librata lacerto

fraxinus acta femur.’
