[464] ἠλεός ‘mad,’ as being the cause of madness. So “Διόνυσος” is the ‘mad god,’ “μαινόμενος” ( Il.6. 132).

ὅς τ᾽ ἐφέηκε πολύφρονά περ μάλ᾽ ἀεῖσαι. From Il.18. 108καὶ χόλος ὅς τ᾽ ἐφέηκε πολύφρονά περ χαλεπῆναι”, which gives a better sense—since singing at a feast is hardly a sign of madness. Note also the otiose “μάλα”.
