[409] ἱερή is referred by Curtius to Skt. root iS; iS-ira-s, meaning ‘powerful,’ ‘active.’ The transition from this sense to the secondary one ‘holy,’ will then be analogous to “μάκαρ”, which originally signifies ‘great,’ from the same root as “μακρός”.
