[530] Join τῆςπαρειαί. We may render ἐλεεινοτάτῳ ‘most pitiful.’ “ἐλεεινόν” as applied to “δάκρυον” is not otiose: it characterises the tears as springing from feeling: whereas such tears as those shed by Thersites in physical pain would not be “ἐλεεινά”.

531-532. εἶβενλείβων. The latter is the true form of the word according to its etymology; the dropping of the initial “λ” being metri gratia. Compare “λαιψηρὸς . . αἰψηρός”. See Lobeck path. el. 1. 108; Curt. G. E. 439.
