[468] κεκαφηότα, here and in Il.5. 698= ‘gasping,’ from root “καπ” (“καφ”), as in “καπ-ύω, καπ-νός, κάπος”, interpreted by Hesych. as “πνεῦμα”. ibid. “ἐγ-κάπ-τει” = “ἐκπνεῖ”. Curtius compares Lat. vapor for cvapor, and Lithuanian kváp-a-s. For the form we may compare “κεκορηότα, κεκοτηότε, τετετιηότες, βεβαρηότα, κεχαρηότα”, all peculiar to Homer. “κεκαφηότα” is commonly taken in agreement with “θυμόν” ‘my exhausted spirit:’ but Eustath. ad loc. is probably right in rendering it “ἐκπεπνευκότα τὴν ψυχήν”, with which we may compare Il.22. 467“ἀπὸ δὲ ψυχὴν ἐκάπυσσεν”.
