[50] ἄλεισον. Commentators give as the etymology, either “” privative and “λεῖος”, so that the cup is rough with embossed work, or else “” and “λεῖος” in the sense of uniformly smooth. Benfey suggests a connection with “ἅλως”, expressive of a cup as round or bowlshaped.
