[240] ἐπέεσσιν. This is the only instance in the Odyssey of “ν ἐφ”. forming position in the fourth thesis of the hexameter. It is also the only real exception to the rule that a short vowel cannot be lengthened by position in that part of the line. See the discussion in the class. Rev. xi. 28, 29, 151-154.
