[233] γῆ is much less common in Homer than “γαῖα”, but need not therefore be condemned. In a formula such as “Γῆ τε καὶ Ἠέλιος” ( Il.3. 104. Il., 19. 259) it is probably ancient. Note that “γαῖα” and “γῆ” are distinct formations (not phonetic varieties): cp. “Ἀθηναίη” and “Ἀθήνη”.
