[377] ἐπίμαστον, apparently from “ἐπιμαίομαι” ‘I feel after, seek out,’ cp. “ἀπροτίμαστος” ‘untouched’ ( Il.19. 263). The exact meaning is difficult to determine. Probably the vagrant is ‘sought out’ in the sense that he did not come unasked, but was brought by Eumaeus. Cp. “ἐπίσπαστον κακόν” (18. 73) of an evil which a man brings on himself (so Döderlein, Hom. Gloss.).
