[444] ἔγνω δὲ προρέοντα. This makes the apodosis to “ἀλλ᾽ ὅτε δή” sup. 441; ‘he recognised him (sc. for a god) as he flowed forth.’ Cp. Soph. Antig.960ἔγνω ψαύων τὸν θεόν”.

κατὰ θυμόν, ‘in his heart;’ not as the Schol. suggests, because exhausted swimmers have no breath left for words; but cp. Il.23. 769.
