[379] ἔμπαιον ‘experienced,’ cp. 21. 400. The scansion of the diphthong αι as a short syllable is without parallel in Homer, but οι is similarly treated in “οἷος”. The derivation of “ἔμπαιος” is not ascertained: it may be connected with the Doric “πάομαι” ‘I possess,’ and thus with “ἔμπης, παμπήδην”, and the Attic “παμπησία” ‘full possession’ (Brugmann, Griech. Gr.^{3}, p. 548).
