[294] ἐσχατιῇ Γόρτυνος, ‘on the verge of the territory of Gortyn.’ ἐσχατιή seems to resemble the Anglo-Saxon ‘mark’ or ‘marches;’ waste forest land which surrounded the greater divisions and the subdivisions of the country.
