[337] πῶς γάρ; ‘Why, how?’ cp. Od.19. 325.Probably the use of γάρ in such interrogative sentences implies really an unexpressed protasis, as e. g. here, ‘you are expecting too much of me.’ We find a similar phrase with the protasis given in full in Od.16. 69 foll. “Εὔμαἰ, μάλα τοῦτο ἔπος θυμαλγὲς ἔειπες:

πῶς γὰρ δὴ τὸν ξεῖνον ἐγὼν ὑποδέξομαι οἴκῳ”;
