[488] Φηραί (Φηρή Il.5. 543) has in Homer the epithets “εὐκτίμεναι” (ib.) and “ζάθεαι Il.9. 151.Its position in Messene is settled by Od.21. 15-19. It was situated on the left bank of the Nedon, at the north-east side of the Messenian Gulf, and belonged to the Lacedaemonian kingdom. It forms one of a group of cities, described as “ἐγγὺς ἁλὸς νέαται Πύλου ἠμαθόεντος Il.9. 151-153. Its modern name is Kalamáta. The two sons of Orsilochus were slain before Troy by Aeneas, Il.5. 540 foll.
