[271] Ἥλιος. The same form occurs in Hymn. 31. 1. Curtius, comparing the Cretan form of the word, viz. “ἀβέλιος”, with the Laconian “ἀβώρ”, i. e. “ἀϝως” or “αὔως”, proposes to refer “ἀϝέλιος” to root us, ‘burn.’ From “αὔως” comes Lat. ‘ausosa’ (aurora), and the Roman gentile name ‘Auselius’ (Aurelius), on which Diac. Paul. says, Epit. 23‘Aureliam familiam ex Sabinis oriundam a Sole dictam putant, quod ei publice a populo Romano datus sit locus in quo sacra facerent Soli qui ex hoc Auseli dicebantur.’
