[357] We do not hear of any actual darkness on the day of the “μνηστηροφονία”. Although it was new moon, we can hardly suppose that an eclipse is intended by the words “κακὴ δ᾽ ἐπιδέδρομεν ἀχλύς”. Rather, the darkness or ‘night’ is that of death: cp. Il.13. 425ἐρεβεννῇ νυκτὶ καλύψαι”=‘to slay,’ and phrases such as “θανάτοιο μέλαν νέφος, κατὰ δ᾽ ὀφθαλμῶν κέχυτ᾽ ἀχλύς”, &c.
