[348] ἔοικα δέ τοι παραείδειν ‘I am fit to sing before you,’ a personal construction, nearly=‘it is fit that I should sing.’ This use of “ἔοικα” is not common, except in the participle “ἐοικώς”. Some take it to mean ‘I seem, in singing to you, to be singing to a god.’ But this is harsh, and moreover is not the sense required by the context. It is not the glory of Ulysses, but the especial worthiness of Phemius, that is insisted on.
