[118] ἀγχιστῖνοι ‘close together,’ ‘in close order’: opposed to “προμνηστῖνοι” (21. 230). The formation of the words is evidently parallel, and therefore “ἀγχιστῖνοι” is not to be derived from the superl. “ἄγχιστος”, but (like “ἀγχιστήρ” in Soph. ) from “ἄγχι”, through a hypothetical verb “ἀγχίζω”.
