[569] ῥαισέμεναι, ‘that he,’ sc. Poseidon, ‘would crush.’

ὄροςἀμφικαλύψειν, ‘would throw a mountain round about the city.’ So Il.8. 331ἀλλὰ θέων περίβη καί οἱ σάκος ἀμφεκάλυψε”. The meaning of Poseidon's threat is not that he will crush the city by hurling some mountain upon it; but that he will pen them in with a mountain-wall, and so cut off their access to the water, and put an end to their seafaring life.
