[772] ἴσαν (elsewhere the imperf. tense from “εἶμι”) is here and in Il.18. 405, Od.13. 170 Od., 23. 152, a form of the pluperfect, from “οἶδα”. It seems to stand in the same relation to “ᾔδεσαν” (“ᾖσαν”) that “ἴσασι” does to “οἴδασι”.

ὡς ἐτέτυκτο, ‘how matters really were;’ viz. that Penelope was aware of their designs. All that the suitors knew was that Penelope had gone to make supplication; and they chose to regard her act as a propitiation of Athena with reference to her immediate marriage.
