[296] ἀπόθεστος ‘cast aside’: probably from a root meaning ‘to desire, pray for.’ This root is probably not “θεσ-”, as Curtius supposed, but “θεθ-” (whence “θέσσαντο” for “θεθ-σαντο, Θέστωρ” for “Θεθ-τωρ”, &c.), Indo-germanic ghedh: whence also “πόθ-ος” for “φόθ-ος” (related to “θεθ-” as “φόνος” to “θεν-” in “θείνω”).
