[390] ἀνὰ … κέρασσεν. The Schol. interprets “ἀνά” here by “ἐκ δευτέρου”, and Eustath. by “δὶς ἐκέρασεν”. But Fäsi renders better, permiscuit, in the sense of permisceri iussit, cp. “κεράσσατο” infra 393. The adverbial “ἀνά”, then, implies the diffusion of the wine through the water in the mixing bowl, as Od.9. 209“ἓν δέπας ἐμπλήσας” (sc. “οἴνου”) “ὕδατος ἀνὰ εἴκοσι μέτρα”

“χεῦε”. Compare “ἀνὰ δὲ κρῖ λευκὸν ἔμιξαν” Od.4. 41, “ἀνέμισγε δὲ σίτῳ φάρμακα” Od.10. 235.Our English equivalent, ‘mixed up,’ comes near enough to the meaning.
