[177] αἳ περιναιετάουσιν. This is a description of perioeci. The expelled inhabitants would have a home found them in other cities. ἐξαλαπάξας denotes expulsion of inhabitants, not demolition of buildings; cp. Il.5. 642“Ἰλίου ἐξαλάπαξε πόλιν, χήρωσε δ᾽ ἀγυιάς”. The etymology of “ἀλαπάζειν” is most obscure. Athenaeus (362 E) connects it with “λαφύσσειν” and “λαπάζειν”, and from the same root perhaps may come “λαπαρός”. Ameis refers to Skt. a/lpas = ‘small.’
